NewsMaker Awards – Singapore 2020

Objectives : - To cultivate a love for the English Language through the use of innovative and engaging broadcasting technologies.
- To widen students’ knowledge in the project topic through research and collaboration.

Competition Format:

This is a news-broadcasting competition open to all primary schools in Singapore. The participants will use the NewsMaker software to produce videos. Please watch the sample video created using Newsmaker:

Each participating school will send a team comprising three Primary 4 students and one teacher mentor. Each participating school can only send one team.

On Competition Day, 19/3/2020, participants will learn how to use NewsMaker, the immersive digital video-news making software. Each team will complete and submit its video by 2pm on the same day. The videos will be assessed by a panel of judges for its content, good use of language, good use of media such as music, video and photos, and the video’s overall aesthetic appeals. Then, the winners will be announced at 4:15pm during the Prize Presentation Ceremony.

The top five performing teams will be presented with Gold, Silver, Bronze and (two) Merits Awards accordingly and all participating students will also receive their participation certificates.

Mr. Jason Leow
Jason is the Chairman of the Speak Good English Movement committee.

Jason Leow is currently the Managing Director, Head of Corporate Affairs & Communications at GIC.

With over 20 years of professional experience, Jason has been in a range of industries, from media to engineering services. He has advised senior executives in organizations undergoing global restructuring, and has led multi-country marketing campaigns. Before GIC, he was the General Manager, External Relations for Shell companies in Singapore. Before Shell, he was global head of marketing communications at Meinhardt. Before that he was Asia Pacific change communications lead at AECOM, based in Shanghai. He has been a correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, based in New York and Shanghai, and China Bureau Chief for The Straits Times, based in Beijing.

Jason is passionate about future-of-work issues and entrepreneurship. He founded and runs a coaching and psychotherapy practice that works with business executives and youth coping with workplace transformations. He is a volunteer at Aidha, a Singapore NGO empowering women through financial literacy and entrepreneurship. In 2018, he was a judge at the Mumbrella Asia Awards.

Jason has been a recipient of the Raffles (Chevening) scholarship, the Wall Street Journal Fellowship in Asia, as well as the New York Financial Writers Association award. He is a graduate of New York University, Goldsmith College (London) and the National University of Singapore.
